Hi everyone...this is Trey.
I just wanted to tell you about my basketball here in Hong Kong. So far, our second best player has only been able to make it to one game and yet our record is 2 wins and 1 tie and I've been keeping track of how many points each players gets total. So far, I have 44 points and the closest to that is 10. that is all... got to get to todays game.
Trey
Mother's note...Keep in mind, basketball isn't necessarily a high priority to the local kids. Trey keeps trying to dish it off as he drives to the basket but that play just isn't there... At least he tries... The positive here is that he gets to play some basketball :)
This started as a blog to keep in touch with our friends and family during our expat experience in Hong Kong...now it has become about our day-to-day adventures in life!

A View From The Peak
When the Genglers were visiting I hoped for a "clear" day to see Hong Kong from The Peak. The morning was clear as can be but by the afternoon (when they returned from their excursion to Beijing) it became a bit hazy...Still - it is an amazing view and thought I'd share it. At 552 meters above sea level, the Peak is the highest mountain on Hong Kong Island. The Peak Tram is a tramcar that takes you up the side of the mountain at quite a slope. In the 19th century, it was a natural signaling post for incoming cargo ships, but more privileged early residents also found it to be a good place to escape the Hong Kong scorching summer heat. Many different wealthy individuals have built their homes there and there once was a hotel there as well. Unfortunately, that was destroyed in a fire in the 1930s. It now attracts over 7 million tourists/visitors each year.

Fatburger...Milkshakes...Free Refills

Thought I'd share a photo from our visit to Fatburger with Mike & Seaneen Gengler...not sure the fatburger sat well with Mike, but we all thoroughly enjoyed our malt shakes. We learned here that a "milkshake" is milk based, not ice cream based. It only took the kids one time of getting a "milkshake" to make them look more closely at the menu items or ask if they don't know to make sure they get it right the first time. There are no do-overs...if they don't like what they order, they'll know for next time.
A hard lesson for the ENTIRE Sandness family is that there are no free refills here. The $3 to $4 USD soda that they are allowed to order in the restaurant is a one-time thing...so they are learning to pace themselves on their drinks also! I'm probably the worst at this so it has been quite difficult for me to "set the example." We did find a California Pizza Kitchen over in the mall that Kyra has done some skating/hockey at...THEY have free refills! :) Only, it's a $100HKD taxi ride to get there to enjoy them.

True Hong Kong Resident
Well, I feel like I can finally say that I am a true Hong Kong resident. Over the course of the past few days, several people (of different nationalities) have asked me for directions to places in Hong Kong. I'm pretty sure that it's not because I look so knowledgeable but perhaps that I look comfortable. Meaning, I look like I belong, which actually makes me feel pretty good because I do feel comfortable here.
Swine Flu Update
There is still only one case of confirmed swine flu here in Hong Kong, but many precautionary measures are being taken everywhere. The kids have to have their temperature taken every day and a form filled out to hand in before entering school. I am praying and praying that this stays under control and that there are no more reported cases here (or anywhere for that matter).
A Vacation Spot
So, we tried out a new beach yesterday (Shek-O Beach) that made us feel like we were on a beach vacation instead of where we actually live. Don't get me wrong, having a beach in view from the apartment and within easy walking distance is something I didn't see in our future and am not complaining about, but this beach had all the "beach amenities" that you look for when you are on a vacation
...the rentable umbrellas, beach chairs, food and drink accessible along the beach, waves in the water for the kids to play in...it was a fabulous day for the Sandness family. The fair maiden that I am, however, came home a little pinker (or redder...not sure if that's a word) than the way I left home. And for those of you longing to know...the Red Rapper lived up to his nickname...he has gotten his initial burn out of the way so he'll be a nice dark brown from here on out! However unfair that may be...

Swine Flu, Our Health Status, McDonald's & Other Miscellaneous Stuff
Swine Flu
Well, I suppose it was inevitable...had our first reported case of swine flu here in Hong Kong...rumors of school closing but from what I can tell in the news they will not make that decision until Sunday evening. It sounds like if no more individuals have shown signs of infection that school will go on as planned.
Some say Hong Kong is overreacting, but I think they've learned the hard way here and I don't mind the overprecautions. We are praying that it stays under control here and that nothing changes our plans for coming home this summer.
Our Health Status
Trey, Keely and I seem to be getting better. Keely is truly NOT enjoying her medicine. I've resorted to bribing her with a sip of my Mt. Dew after she takes her meds. Now, before she'll let me put it in her mouth she says "sip of mommy's soda?" in her innocent little voice. She's also a fan of chocolate. That might have to be my next bribery tool if the Mt. Dew wears thin. Ten days of really yucky tasting medicine may take a lot of bribery. Trey is on the same medicine as Keely and it is very funny to watch his body shudder as he prepares to take his own dose. At least I don't have to bribe him.
McDonald's Delivers!
So, I learned something new the other day...McDonald's delivers! I was surprised to learn when we were in Paris that McDonald's served beer, but here they even deliver. The only problem is that a Big Mac just doesn't taste the same if you can't get it hot...at least in my opinion.
Monsters Vs. Aliens
We went to see Monsters Vs. Aliens in 3D in the Omni Theater here last weekend. The WHOLE family...including Keely! She was screaming and crying as we were trying to leave her with our helper so that Craig and I could take the older kids and daddy was feeling too guilty to leave her home. All I said to him was that it won't be me leaving the theater with her if she won't sit through the movie. But, lo and behold, big 3D glasses and all, she sat through it just fine. And she obviously saw the 3D effect as she was reaching out to touch the hand of one of the monsters that was reaching out toward us. Very fun...
